a little insanity never did anybody no harm

I have been having dreams like being the father of two cats and bringing them to school, being hunted down by an assassin, wandering in and out of Iracambi and the rainforest and home, like they're the same place. I'm a mess in some ways - I smell right now because I was trekking through forest all afternoon and it began to rain halfway through, so I smell like wet forest, and I don't plan on showering today - tomorrow maybe - the day after I suppose. I have bug bites all on my right arm and both legs (because I do wear shorts here), and I haven't shaved since São Paulo. It's not that I'm filthy, or even dirty; I'm just not that clean, and it feels great - to have no regard for how you look.

I'm going to learn how to make bread here. I spent the morning doing physical labour in the nursery, digging holes for future tables for future seedlings, sweating beads on bare feet, on red soil. When you stop for a break, in the long stretches between meals, it's nice to have some bread to dig in to. And there are people here to teach. When I come back, I have decided, I want to get back into some breed of martial arts, and stick with it, because physical activity, as a long stretch of sedentary life made me forget, feels so good. I also think it's a little absurd that my brother is an amazing guitarist, and I don't know how to play at all. At this point maybe I'm getting a little lofty, but it would be nice to begin to pick that up too when I come home.

Today, after dinner, we have decided to watch a movie - because it's been a while, and the thought of not having to think for 2 hours is sort of appealing right now. Because all we really have to do here - and not even working can help this - is think!

Tomorrow, the plan is to test out one of the tourist days we developed (our entire itinerary includes 4 days packed full of action). It involves a day-long hike through estrada, mata, e pedra (rural road, forest, and stone) to a locally famous peak. We're also borrowing the English David to bring the GIS system for mapping purposes, I believe to enhance current data versus to use as guidance. Unfortunately, we can't camp out because on Thursday we're leaving early to hitch a ride with the owner of the farm and NGO to the nearest city to get cash from the bank. I have roughly the equivalent of about 10 dollars left, lol.

But anyway. Another day, another game of chess. Except today, I got a letter - wonder who it's from?
